Acne (Acne Vulgaris)
What is acne?
Acne is a disease that affects the skin's oil glands. Acne is the term for plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms.
Over 80% of males and 70% of females going through puberty use some kind of acne medication, although it is not restricted to any age group and can affect women with a hormone imbalance during pregnancy and, increasingly, during the menopause.
Adults in their 20s and even into their 40s can get acne. While acne is not a life threatening condition, acne can be upsetting and effect an individua's self-esteem.
Glands in our pores/follicles produce an oily substance called sebum. When the follicle of a skin gland clogs up, it causes an infection, and a pustule forms.
Furthermore, when severe, acne can lead to serious and permanent scarring. The only sure method of preventing or limiting the extent of scars is to treat acne early in its course, and for as long as necessary.
The more that inflammation can be prevented or moderated, the more likely it is that scars can be prevented.
