Spider Veins and Leg Veins (Varicose)

Millions of women and men are bothered by unwanted blood vessels on the legs such as spider and varicose veins.  They usually appear as clusters of red, blue or purple veins that most commonly appear on the thighs, calves and ankles.

The cause of varicose and spider veins is not known. However, in many cases, they run in families. Women seem to develop this problem more often than men.

In fact, it's estimated that at least half of the adult female population is plagued with this problem.

Spider Veins

Spider veins

Spider veins are somewhat like varicose veins. The main difference between the two is their size as spider veins are smaller. Spider veins also appear nearer to the exterior part of the skin and are usually blue or red. They resemble spider webs, hence the name, and are located on the actual face and legs.

Spider veins are small dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin or mucous membranes, measuring between 0.5 and 1 millimetre in diameter.[2] They can develop anywhere on the body but are commonly seen on the face around the nose, cheeks, and chin. They can also develop on the legs, specifically on the upper thigh, below the knee joint, and around the ankles.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are blood vessels or capillaries that have become swollen because of blood that has accumulated over time. They appear as "protruding lines" on the outer portion of the epidermal layer (skin) and resemble cords that are contorted and protuberant.

Changes in oestrogen levels in the blood may have a role in the development of varicose veins. This may be due to taking the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy, or due to natural hormonal fluctuations such as puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause.

Other factors that may contribute include:

  • Standing or sitting for long periods
  • Being immobile for long periods (for example, being confined to bed)
  • Lack of exercise
  • Obesity

How does Sclerotherapy work to remove Varicose & Spider veins?

This procedure involves injecting a slerosing agent into the affected veins.

It causes the vein to close by irritating the blood vessel so it swells, sticks together and is expelled by the body.  Each vein may require several injections, given some weeks apart.

Multiple veins can be injected in one treatment. A typical Sclerotherapy session is relatively quick, lasting only about 15 to 45 minutes.

Most patients can expect about 80% improvement in treated veins.

  • Telangiectasias (spider veins)
  • Varicose veins 1-3 mm in diameter
  • Residual veins from a surgical procedure
  • Varicosities of 3-4 mm reappearing (recurring) sometime after surgery for varicose veins
  • Bleeding varicose veins (i.e. sudden rupture of a varicose vein)
