FAQs

What is the difference between IPL vs Laser?

In short:

Laser is mono-chromatic, that is, one specific wavelength.
IPL is poly-chromatic, which uses multiple wavelengths.

However, not all IPL’s and lasers are the same, these are just generic terms – a bit like saying hatch-backs and sedans.  You need to know what make and model; within that make, how good the engine is, how it has been maintained, a bit like when you’re comparing cars.

The light (photons) that is emitted at a particular wavelength is the same whether it is laser or IPL.

What will vary is:

  • The energy level – how powerful the system is.

  • The pulse width – which impacts depth of penetration and safety

  • The wavelength – If the wavelength is not ideal for a particular treatment, it doesn't matter if you have the best laser or IPL, it will not deliver the best result.

  • How the Energy is delivered – in a smooth continuous wave, or in spikes.

Because the Starlux & Sciton BBL systems used by Facial Attraction use are so adaptable, our highly trained Clinicians can choose different wavelengths, pulse widths, energy levels and temperature.

Other IPLs don't have these functions because they are pre-set - ours are not pre-set. Therefore, we can specifically target and effectively treat a particular problem.

The Starlux SIPL system and Sciton BBL systems used by Facial Attraction offer increased power, a longer "pulse-width" of the light beam, and integrated cooling of the surface of the skin. This effective cooling allows maximum destructive power with less pain and discomfort as with other older IPL and Laser machines.

This ensures greater protection against skin burns and hypopigmentation, which is quite often seen with some inferior IPL machines and Lasers.

How important is the Clinician for effective Hair Removal?

When looking for a suitable clinic & clinician you need to compare how many treatments you will need and the effectiveness of each treatment being performed.  If you require more treatments at a reduced price, in the long run it will end up costing you more money and time.

This is where the expertise & training of the Clinician becomes critical to providing effective results economically!

On the flip side, if the clinician is inexperience, they can under treat and you will see no result or over treat, which will increase the risks of adverse reactions.

Because the SIPL's Facial Attraction use is so adaptable, the Clinician can choose different wavelengths, pulse widths, energy levels and temperature.

Once we have the right wavelength, pulse with and energy levels the other thing to consider is the safety.  Since our energy is delivered in a smooth pulse rather than multi spiking (one long smooth pulse as opposed to lots of spiking pulses) it reduces risks.  Having integrated cooling allows our system to deliver more energy safely whilst simultaneously cooling the top layer of the skin to 5 degrees.

What that means is usually fewer treatments are required and in a safer and more comfortable way, delivered by our highly trained clinicians.

Is the Starlux SIPL Laser safe?

Yes, it is very safe. The smooth pulse technology ensures a constant flat beam throughout each pulse, without the power spikes of other technologies.

However, we strongly recommend you choose operators that are fully qualified, experienced and accredited, and have completed additional clinical training courses. This will ensure accurate diagnosis, correct treatment strategies, maximum comfort to you and most importantly, the safest treatment possible.

Are all IPL’s the same?

Don’t be fooled, not all Pulsed Light Systems (IPL’s/Lasers) are the same. Just as not all cars are the same. Here is a comparison to demonstrate how advanced the Starlux is:

   Starlux  Multilux  Quantum  Elos  LHE
 Power (Joules)
 300  147  123  90  85
 Watts (@7m/s)
 42,857  21,000  17,570  12,857  12,143
Extract presented at Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australasia Conference, Australia May 2005.

But it's not just about the power, there is also more to it than that. Speak to us to find out why our Starlux SIPL Laser System is considered "Gold Standard" in the industry.

Is Laser painful?

The sensation is like a rubber band snapping onto the skin. Some experience a mild sunburn sensation for a few hours afterwards. This is minimised by the new built in patented contact cooling technology which ensures the skin remains cooled throughout treatment, providing maximum comfort and safety.

Can the Starlux SIPL Laser System be used on all parts of my body?

Yes, except directly around the eyes.

With Laser Hair Removal is there any down time after treatment?

No, you can go straight back to work.

What is the best hair removal treatment time?

Hair grows in cycles of various phases:

  • anagen is the growth phase
  • catagen is the regressing phase
  • telogen the resting phase.

Normally up to 90% of the hair follicles are in anagen phase while, 10–14% are in telogen and 1–2% in catagen. The cycle's length varies on different parts of the body. For eyebrows, the cycle is completed in around 4 months, while it takes the scalp 4 years to finish; this is the reason eyebrow hairs have a much shorter length limit compared to hairs on the head. Growth cycles are controlled by a chemical signal like epidermal growth factor.

The best time for hair treatment is in the early “Anagen” phase where the hair follicle has an abundance of melanin, and the hair bulb is located deep in the dermis.

There are several reasons for this. Firstly, more light energy can reach the early Anagen bulb due to its relatively shallow location.

Secondly, the effect of hair growth delay due to the damage to the hair matrix is maximised, because the matrix is damaged in the beginning of the Anagen phase.

Thirdly, heat diffusion from the hair matrix is maximised at this stage because the two are still not too far apart. As a result, permanent hair reduction is achieved for the treated follicles

What is Microdermabrasion – Clairederm Medical Grade?

Microdermabrasion is a system of intense exfoliation and resurfacing that rejuvenates the skin by using ultra-fine crystals (corundum, organic, salt).

These crystals strike the skin to remove its outer layer, known as the stratum corneum. At the same time, a vacuum tube sweeps up both the crystals and the skin’s cellular debris. It is used for skin resurfacing and treating a range of skin abnormalities.

How Does Microdermabrasion Feel?

No anaesthesia is required and people generally cope extremely well.

Most people report a slightly scratchy and tingly sensation on their skin, however levels can be adjusted to suit your individual needs. A lighter or deeper level can be achieved, with the Clairderm Medical Microdermabrasion.

Does Electrolysis Hurt?

Some people find electrolysis painful, but not many find it hurts enough to need pain relief.

Everyone has their own tolerance to pain. Electrolysis has been likened to a stinging and pricking sensation, and each follicle has to go through it.

How does SkinTyte™ work?

The SkinTyte™ procedure utilizes a broadband of light energy to deeply heat dermal collagen. This process promotes partial denaturation and contraction of collagen. The heat also initiates the body’s natural healing process which creates a renewed collagen foundation leading to increased skin firmness.

Powerful cooling maintains the outer surface of your skin at a cool temperature before, during, and after each pulse providing the patient a comfortable and safe procedure.

What should I expect after a SkinTyte™ treatment?

You may experience some mild redness in the treated area immediately after and this should return to normal within minutes. Since the SkinTyte™ procedure is non-invasive there is no downtime so you can resume regular activities immediately following treatment. No procedure has ever been developed that can accomplish such terrific results with such low risk and no down time. In rare cases, swelling of the face for 3-5 days may occur and is most common in severely sun damaged skin due to reduced quality of connective tissue around the blood vessels. You can also apply makeup and sunscreen after each session
